Funding Body: Bord Iascaigh Mhara
Geographic Area: Ireland
Local Study Area: Waters off west/southwest coast of Ireland
Project Co-Ordinator: Ronan Cosgrove
CMRC Contact: Michelle Cronin
An Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) have funded a pilot study to determine the impact of seals on depredation of fish from nets in the inshore fishery in Irish waters. The research will build on existing programmes on-going in Ireland with regard to seal interactions with fisheries that CMRC are involved in e.g. Beaufort EAF project.
CMRC, in conjunction with BIM and the Marine Institute will attempt to quantify damage caused by seals to inshore fisheries. Observers will spend time at sea on fishing vessels to quantify damage to catch. Boats upon which observers are placed will operate from Dingle, Fenit and Achill. Seasonal and geographical variation in seal depredation will be investigated. Potential management and mitigation options will be explored as part of this study.
