Knowledge and information management have been core activities in the CMRC since it was established. Initially, the focus was on supporting the other research themes within the Centre, and to developing decision support systems for coastal management projects. More recently, however, the Geomatics group has been established in its own right and places CMRC at the forefront of geospatial information management research and development within Europe and beyond.

The group is a leader in the development of web-GIS systems and standards-based data management and exchange and actively contributes to implementation of European Union Spatial Data Infrastructure initiatives such as the INSPIRE Directive. Harmonised data formats, content management and 3D visualisation of large geospatial databases are emerging areas of interest for the group.
