Damien graduated from University College Cork in 2005 with a B.Sc. in Zoology. After graduation Damien worked for UCC for a short spell, studying the resident Dolphins in the Shannon estuary. He subsequently spent time with a hydrographic surveying company, working on a variety of projects.
In 2008 he spent a year living in Mexico, as part of a marine expedition run by Global Vision International. The project surveyed the coral reefs on part of the Caribbean coastline. Following this Damien returned to University College Cork in 2009 to complete an M. Sc. in Marine Biology. He joined the CMRC to complete his M. Sc. thesis with the Ecojel project, studying the abundance, distribution and seasonality of Scyphozoan jelly fish in the Irish Sea.
After completing his M. Sc. Damien began working for the CMRC as a research assistant on the marine mammal monitoring project in Broadhaven Bay, Co. Mayo.
